Dark Side Of The Moon
One of the things I love doing is putting in multiple levels of references for viewers to find, each time they look at a piece. Doing a month’s worth of work for just one level of joke just seems inefficient.
So what’s going on here? Okay, you’ve got naked babes on the moon, okay. But why are they on an I-beam?
Have you guys ever seen this image: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunch_atop_a_Skyscraper ? That’s where I got my first level of inspiration. Maybe 20% of people might recognize steelworkers eating lunch on top of a skyscraper.
But have you also seen this image, which like every fifth guy in my college had up on his dorm wall at one point: https://www.frontpagenewsmusic.com/post/the-back-story-behind-that-pink-floyd-back-catalogue-poster
That’s where the little patches on their shoulders came from. I would guess maybe 5% of people would recognize that. More if I had painted the patches over their butts, like in the original photo, but those butts were too pretty to cover up.
And finally, you’ve got the Bugs Bunny logic of that middle girl gasping for air. Like, theoretically they’re up there to eat lunch, right? And it’s not like the other helmets are airtight, but it’s just the cartoon logic of the middle girl not starting to suffocate until she lifts her visor to eat that just tickles my funny bone every time I look at it.
And that stupid hole in the helmet for the blonde’s ponytail. It’s drawing little dumb jokes like that, that make it all worth it.
If I had more skill at drawing food, I would have drawn the girls with Big Macs and Fries instead of mush sandwiches.
Hope you enjoy it, it’s probably one of my favorite works I’ve finished so far.
